Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the short-lived LEGO Freestyle line, the Caravan and Rowboat set 3680-1 was designed as a thematic expansion for young builders. The set emerged during a period when LEGO was experimenting with smaller, accessory-focused kits that encouraged imaginative, open-ended play rather than rigid, instruction-heavy model building.
The design prioritizes versatility and travel-themed roleplay, featuring a camper trailer and a small boat that reflect the leisure-focused aesthetic typical of late-90s building sets. While the set did not achieve the status of core themes like Town or Space, it is fondly remembered by collectors for its modularity and the inclusion of travel-specific accessories that were often compatible with broader urban layouts of the era.
