Where it came from
The LEGO Chewbacca Magnet, set number 850639-1, was released in 2013 as part of a line of collectible character magnets produced under the LEGO Star Wars license. These magnets were designed to function both as display pieces and practical items, featuring a minifigure permanently attached to a molded plastic base containing a magnet. This specific design reflected a shift in the company's approach to magnet sets, moving away from the earlier practice of gluing minifigures to bases toward a more integrated, albeit non-detachable, aesthetic.
The figure features the classic Chewbacca design consistent with the Star Wars minifigure range of that era, utilizing a molded headpiece and printing that captures the character's Wookiee appearance. While these sets were intended as accessible entry points for fans of the franchise to display iconic characters on metallic surfaces, the permanent attachment of the figure to the base was a point of contention among adult collectors who preferred to incorporate the minifigures into wider LEGO builds. The set remains a snapshot of the intersection between toy branding and functional household novelty items.
