Where it came from
Released in 2013 as part of the LEGO Legends of Chima theme, CHI Battles (set 70113-1) was designed to introduce the Speedorz building and play system. The set was created to facilitate high-speed competitive play, featuring a gear-driven launcher mechanism and a customizable vehicle, reflecting the theme's focus on magical energy and animal-inspired factions. The design prioritizes modularity, allowing builders to swap components between this set and others in the Speedorz line to influence performance in tabletop racing games.
The set centers on a confrontation between the Lion and Crocodile tribes, echoing the core narrative conflict of the Legends of Chima television series and toy line. While the theme itself was met with a polarized reception due to its heavy reliance on original IP versus established licenses, the Speedorz sub-series was praised by builders for its mechanical innovation and the inclusion of unique minifigures, which helped distinguish the product within the broader LEGO portfolio of the early 2010s.
