Where it came from
The Cities of Wonders - Malaysia: Ketupat set was commissioned by The LEGO Group as a regional promotional item specifically for the Malaysian market. Released to coincide with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, the set serves as a cultural tribute to the ketupat, a traditional rice cake wrapped in woven palm leaves that acts as a symbolic centerpiece for festivities in Southeast Asia.
The design utilizes standard system bricks to replicate the intricate, geometric lattice pattern of the woven coconut leaf casing. By simplifying the complex, authentic weave into a modular construction, the designers aimed to capture the essence of the cultural icon while maintaining the recognizable aesthetic of the brand, leading to a positive reception among regional collectors who appreciated the nod to local heritage.
