Where it came from
The M196-1 City Magnet Set was released as part of a line of decorative novelty items aimed at capturing the aesthetic of urban landscapes for domestic display. Produced during a period when themed refrigerator magnets gained significant popularity as affordable, collectible souvenirs, these sets were designed to translate iconic metropolitan architecture into simplified, colorful silhouettes. The design focused on clean lines and a high-contrast palette to ensure the buildings remained recognizable even at the small scale required for household metal surfaces.
The development of the set was managed by internal design teams prioritizing portability and wide-market appeal. By utilizing molded plastic or coated metal composites, the manufacturers sought to balance durability with the intricate detailing of the cityscapes featured. Upon release, the set was received as a functional desktop or kitchen accessory, appreciated primarily for its nostalgic value and its ability to serve as a small-scale tribute to global travel destinations.
