Where it came from
The LEGO Colosseum, released as set 10276 in late 2020, was designed to be one of the most ambitious models in the LEGO Icons series. Conceived as a tribute to the Flavian Amphitheatre in Rome, the set was developed to capture the architectural grandeur of the ancient landmark, incorporating specific details such as the three distinct architectural orders—Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian—that decorate the building's exterior arches. It arrived during a period when the company was increasingly focusing on complex, display-oriented sets marketed toward an adult demographic.
LEGO designer Rok Zgalin Kobe led the project, drawing inspiration from the historic structure's enduring legacy and complex modular design. The team aimed to replicate the oval shape and the crumbling, weathered nature of the stone ruins using a sophisticated sub-assembly system. Upon its release, it was noted for its sheer scale and the intricate engineering required to maintain structural integrity while representing the Colosseum’s iconic, partially collapsed facade. It received widespread acclaim for its architectural accuracy and the technical achievement of its construction techniques.
