Control Centre II

Released in 1995 as part of the LEGO Technic line, the Control Centre II set 8485-1 represented a significant advancement in educational robotics and mechanical engineering for the consumer market. It was designed to function as a sophisticated workshop, allowing builders to construct several complex models, including a robotic arm, a lunar rover, and a scorpion. The set was conceived during a period when LEGO was aggressively expanding its electronic capabilities, aiming to bridge the gap between simple construction and programmable automation.

The design of the set centered on the 'Control Centre' unit, a multi-channel hub capable of managing several motors and sensors simultaneously, which was a substantial leap from previous single-motor Technic offerings. The industrial aesthetic was heavily influenced by the modular versatility required to power three distinct mechanical builds with a single base unit. While it was well-received by hobbyists for its technical complexity and the challenge of its intricate gear assemblies, it also marked the end of an era, as later Technic sets shifted toward the more integrated Mindstorms system shortly thereafter.
