Where it came from
Crossbow Attack, released under the set number 7090-1, is a smaller entry from the LEGO Castle theme's Fright Knights sub-theme, which debuted in 1997. This series marked a distinct departure from the classic, heroic fantasy aesthetics of earlier LEGO Castle lines, introducing a darker, more macabre visual identity characterized by black, neon green, and purple color schemes. The set was designed to capture the atmospheric aesthetic of the Fright Knights, focusing on the character Basil the Bat Lord and his faction.
The design of the set reflects the era's experimentation with specialized accessories, featuring a simple but functional ballista-style crossbow and a dedicated Fright Knight minifigure. It was intended as an affordable impulse-purchase set that expanded the lore of the Fright Knights faction. While the sub-theme itself was polarizing among long-time fans due to its departure from the traditional medieval fantasy tone established in the 1980s, these sets remain significant for their unique color palettes and the introduction of distinctive character designs that defined late-1990s LEGO sets.
