Where it came from
The LEGO Customizable Weapon Set (853986-1) was released in 2020 as a polybag-style accessory pack designed to supplement the Ninjago theme. It was produced to provide builders with a variety of handheld armaments and specialized components that could be easily integrated into existing minifigure displays or scenes, reflecting LEGO's long-standing practice of offering low-cost blister packs or accessory sets to enhance playability.
The design of the set focuses on modularity, featuring an array of swords, spears, and elemental-themed accessories that fit standard minifigure grips. While it lacks a specific designer credit, the aesthetic aligns with the stylized, martial-arts-inspired weapons characteristic of the Ninjago universe. Upon its release, it was well-received by the building community for its utility, as it offered a cost-effective way to equip armies of minifigures without requiring the purchase of larger, more expensive vehicle or location-based sets.
