Where it came from
The Dagger Trap, set 20017-1, was released as a promotional polybag set in 2011. It was distributed primarily through specific retail partnerships, most notably as a promotional item at Toys 'R' Us stores. The set consists of a small, brick-built mechanism designed to represent a classic adventure trope, fitting into the aesthetic of treasure-hunting themes common in utility-focused building sets of that era.
The design of the Dagger Trap reflects a minimalist approach to functional building, utilizing a simple lever-and-hinge mechanism to simulate a trap being triggered. It was crafted as a low-cost, high-engagement set intended to draw younger builders into the world of creative mechanical play. While it is a modest build, it remains a notable example of the polybag marketing strategy used to bridge the gap between larger, thematic product waves and accessible, impulse-buy items.
