Where it came from
Released in 2000 as part of the short-lived LEGO Throwbot series—marketed as Slizer in international markets—the Double Hover set represents a pivotal moment in the company's experimental design phase. This line was a direct precursor to the Bionicle phenomenon, introducing specialized action figures built from Technic elements that focused on modularity and playability rather than traditional brick-based construction.
The Double Hover set was designed to showcase the series' signature gear-driven functions and interchangeable limbs, intended to appeal to a demographic interested in more kinetic, sci-fi oriented build experiences. While the aesthetic was polarizing among traditionalists, the series was well-received by younger audiences for its focus on character-driven play, effectively bridging the gap between the complex engineering of Technic and the narrative-rich world of later constraction figures.
