Where it came from
The LEGO Empire State Building magnet, set 854030-1, was released in 2020 as part of the company's broader effort to create stylized, travel-oriented souvenirs. This set consists of a molded plastic magnet base featuring a printed 1x4 tile that serves as the foundation for a small-scale, brick-built recreation of the iconic Art Deco skyscraper. It reflects a shift in LEGO's design language toward compact, desk-friendly displays that capture the architectural essence of global landmarks within a very limited piece count.
The design was developed by the internal LEGO team to bridge the gap between their complex Architecture series and casual impulse-purchase collectibles. By utilizing a literal magnet element as the structural anchor, the designers aimed to provide a functional decorative piece that appeals to both AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) and tourists seeking a tactile memento. Upon its release, it was well-received for its clever use of micro-scale building techniques, successfully distilling the skyscraper's famous terraced silhouette into a palm-sized model.
