Where it came from
The 604-2 Excavator was released in 1976 as part of the Legoland supplemental line, reflecting the brand's shift toward functional construction vehicles. During this era, the company expanded its offerings to include more realistic, mechanical-themed sets, moving away from purely abstract building models to capture the imagination of children interested in industrial machinery.
The design prioritizes the iconic primary color palette that defined the aesthetic of mid-70s sets. Its simple, blocky construction utilizes early specialty hinge pieces to simulate the movement of a mechanical digger. It remains a notable example of early articulated design, celebrated by collectors for its straightforward geometry and the clever use of limited brick varieties to achieve a recognizable, utilitarian form.
