Where it came from
The 1047-1 Extra Track set was released in the late 1970s as an accessory pack for the early LEGO Train system. At this stage in the company's history, the modular track system was designed to allow hobbyists to expand their primary locomotive sets, reflecting a shift toward more intricate, custom-built layouts that encouraged extended play beyond the box contents.
The design follows the classic blue-sleeper aesthetic typical of the 4.5V and 12V train lines of the era. Developed by the internal design team in Billund, the track was engineered for compatibility with the manual push-along trains that preceded the motorization kits. It was well-received by fans for its utilitarian simplicity, providing the essential curves and straights needed to transition from a basic oval to a more complex figure-eight configuration.
