Where it came from
The LEGO Farm Set (197-1) was released in 1976 as part of an era that predates the modern minifigure, focusing instead on simple brick-built structures and a distinct, charming aesthetic. It was designed to offer children a pastoral play experience, utilizing basic elements to construct a barn-like stable and a small fenced area, reflecting the company’s broader move toward diversifying their thematic sets during the mid-1970s.
This set is notable for its reliance on the classic primary-color palette and the inclusion of simple, non-articulated animals and agricultural accessories. While the design is modest by contemporary standards, it was well-received as an accessible building experience that encouraged imaginative play centered on rural life, serving as an early ancestor to the more complex Town and City themes that would follow.
