Where it came from
The Fisherman, set number 40066-1, was released by the LEGO Group in 2008 as a standalone promotional polybag set. It emerged during a period when the company was expanding its presence in retail environments through small, accessible impulse-buy sets that featured a single minifigure accompanied by a modest build and a few thematic accessories, such as a fishing rod, a crab, and a small pier section.
The design follows the classic aesthetic of early 2000s LEGO minifigures, emphasizing simplicity and playability. While there is no singular credited designer for this specific promotional set, it reflects the broader design philosophy of the period, which focused on creating compact vignettes that could easily integrate into larger city layouts. It was well-received by fans for providing an affordable way to add civilian characters to their dioramas, effectively capturing a quintessential hobbyist archetype.
