Where it came from
The LEGO Flower set, released in 2002 under the product number 2898-1, represents a period of experimentation for the brand as they expanded their non-licensed catalog. Created as a simple, approachable promotional or impulse-buy item, it utilizes basic system bricks to form a stylized botanical figure, reflecting the company’s push toward creating small, self-contained display pieces that did not require complex building techniques.
This design choice prioritized accessibility and playfulness, typical of early 2000s small-box sets that focused on primary colors and straightforward geometry. While it lacks the intricate parts library of modern floral sets, it is recognized by collectors as a foundational example of the company’s efforts to diversify its offerings beyond traditional vehicle and building themes, eventually paving the way for the extensive botanical collections seen today.
