Where it came from
The Fly Guy figure, designated as 71386-9, was released by LEGO as part of the Super Mario Character Packs Series 2. Launched in 2021, this series was designed to expand the interactive Super Mario Starter Course ecosystem, offering individual blind-bagged figures that could be scanned by the digital LEGO Mario or Luigi figures to trigger unique sounds and reactions within the app-integrated play experience.
The character design captures the distinct aesthetic of the Shy Guy-variant first appearing in the Super Mario World series. LEGO designers utilized a combination of printed 2x2 round tiles and specific wing elements to replicate the creature's simple, iconic mask and propeller-topped appearance, aiming to balance character accuracy with the modular, brick-based aesthetic required for integration with the electronic play sets.
