Where it came from
The LEGO Garage with Automatic Door, set number 236-1, was released in 1970 as a supplemental piece designed to integrate with the burgeoning town and building-scale systems of the era. This component was created to offer builders a functional element for their modular urban layouts, reflecting LEGO's shift during the late 1960s and early 1970s toward more realistic, activity-oriented play features rather than purely abstract construction.
The design is characterized by a utilitarian aesthetic common to the Legoland-era parts, featuring a signature white base and door frame paired with a distinctive mechanism that allowed the door to slide upward. Its reception among collectors today is primarily rooted in its status as a quintessential piece of early accessory architecture, representing a period when the company was refining the mechanical interactivity of its building sets.
