Where it came from
The Glider, released as set 1187-1 in 1976, emerged during a transitional era for the LEGO Group as they expanded their reach into specialized small-scale building sets. This model was part of a modest collection of vehicles designed to demonstrate basic aeronautical principles through simplified brick construction, appealing to a younger demographic interested in flight.
The design of the Glider is emblematic of mid-1970s aesthetic choices, favoring functional, blocky silhouettes that maximized the limited palette of standard bricks available at the time. While it lacked the complex articulation seen in modern sets, it was well-received as an accessible building experience that served as a fundamental entry point for children engaging with the brand's aviation-themed catalog.
