Where it came from
The Highwayman was released in 2017 as part of the LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 17, identified as set number 71018. This blind-bag series was designed to offer diverse, character-driven figures that did not belong to a specific licensed theme, allowing the design team to lean into historical and archetypal tropes. The figure draws inspiration from the 18th-century British literary and folklore archetype of the gentleman bandit, complete with a tricorne hat, a period-appropriate waistcoat, and a classic flintlock pistol accessory.
The design emphasizes historical flair through intricate printing on the torso and legs, featuring a ruffled cravat and long coat tails, which was a notable detail for a figure of this scale. Upon its debut, the series was well-received by the adult collector community for its thematic variety and the inclusion of unique accessories, such as the translucent gold coins included with the Highwayman. It remains a popular choice for builders interested in creating historical dioramas or expanded pirate-themed displays.
