Where it came from
Released in 2001 as part of the initial wave of the Lego Bionicle line, Huki was one of the six original Matoran villagers from the island of Mata Nui. The set was designed to introduce the biomechanical aesthetic that defined the theme, featuring a distinctive color palette of orange and brown, representative of the Po-Matoran village of Po-Koro. This figure served as a foundational piece for the overarching Bionicle narrative, which was notable at the time for being one of the first Lego lines to integrate a complex, multimedia-driven story directly into the marketing and building experience.
The character design reflects the work of Lego's internal design team, who aimed to create articulated, highly poseable figures that could withstand play while maintaining a cohesive, gritty sci-fi look. Huki—later known as Hewkii—gained significant popularity among fans for his role as a champion of the sport of Kolhii. His design became a template for the small, collectible canister sets that allowed children to build the entire population of the island, helping the theme establish a massive, dedicated following that lasted for over a decade.
