Where it came from
The Iconic VIP Set, cataloged as 40178-1, was released by The LEGO Group in 2017 as a promotional item. It was primarily designed to incentivize members of the LEGO VIP loyalty program, often serving as a gift-with-purchase during specific qualifying shopping periods. The set encapsulates the brand's self-referential humor, featuring a miniature build of a LEGO store, a VIP card, and a minifigure equipped with a store-branded shopping bag.
The design draws heavily from the recognizable aesthetic of official LEGO brand retail locations, focusing on the company's identity as a toy manufacturer. By including a physical representation of the VIP card, the set serves as a tangible acknowledgment of the brand's most dedicated customers. It was received as a functional desk display that reflects the internal culture and retail experience of the company rather than its traditional play themes.
