Where it came from
Released in 2023 as part of the LEGO Avatar theme, the Ilu Discovery set was created to coincide with the theatrical release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The set captures a scene from the film where characters explore the Pandoran oceans, focusing on the bioluminescent marine creatures known as Ilu. This line was developed to translate the distinct, organic aesthetics of James Cameron's science fiction universe into the structured medium of LEGO bricks, requiring specialized molds for the creatures and a color palette intended to evoke the underwater environment of the Metkayina clan.
The design team at the LEGO Group utilized a combination of traditional building techniques and new molded elements to achieve the creature's fluid silhouette. The set was met with interest from fans of the film franchise and collectors of fantasy-themed building sets, largely due to its inclusion of unique minifigures representing characters from the sequel. As a mid-sized set in the broader collection, it reflects the company’s efforts to expand beyond long-standing core themes by leaning into the visual spectacle of modern blockbuster films.
