Where it came from
The LEGO Brick Sketches Iron Man set, released in 2022, represents a unique artistic direction for the brand, utilizing a 12-by-16 stud baseplate to create a textured, three-dimensional portrait. Inspired by the pop-art style of Chris McVeigh, who originally conceived the concept as a fan-built project before joining the LEGO design team, this series was intended to offer adult collectors a displayable, gallery-style piece that departs from traditional minifigure-scale play sets.
The design employs layered plates and tiles to achieve the recognizable aesthetic of Tony Stark's iconic Mark 85 armor. By prioritizing depth and geometric relief over structural complexity, the set achieves a sophisticated look that mimics hand-drawn illustrations. It was generally received as a thoughtful expansion into the decor market, appealing specifically to Marvel enthusiasts looking for a desk-friendly nod to the cinematic universe.
