Where it came from
Released in 2017, the LEGO Iconic Chess Set (40174-1) was designed as a versatile, dual-purpose addition to the LEGO catalog. Created as part of the company's efforts to bridge the gap between traditional board games and creative building, the set serves both as a functional game board and as a display piece showcasing modular design principles. Its aesthetic focuses on a clean, classic black and white color palette that prioritizes utility for gameplay.
The design of this set emphasizes practicality, featuring a foldable board that cleverly conceals storage compartments for the minifigures and brick-built pieces. By utilizing standard minifigures for the king, queen, and pawns, LEGO provided a customizable experience that allowed collectors to easily swap characters, reflecting the brand’s core philosophy of open-ended play. It was received favorably by the community for its compact footprint and the inclusion of a checkers variant, making it a staple for both enthusiasts of the strategy game and LEGO builders.
