Where it came from
The LEGO Kingdoms Chess Set (853373-1) was released in 2012 as a specialized promotional set within the broader LEGO Kingdoms theme. Designed to blend traditional board gaming with the building play experience, the set served as a centerpiece for collectors who appreciated the medieval fantasy aesthetic that defined the Kingdoms line during its active run from 2010 to 2013.
The set features a buildable chessboard and 28 unique minifigures representing two opposing factions: a Crown King army and a Dragon Knight army. The design relies on the visual language of the Kingdoms sub-theme, characterized by heraldic shield patterns and detailed torso prints, which were crafted by LEGO design teams to evoke classic castle tropes while maintaining the modular, customizable nature inherent to the brand.
