Where it came from
Released in 2015 by DK Publishing, LEGO Ninjago: Build Your Own Adventure represents a shift in how LEGO presented their building sets to children and adult fans alike. Rather than focusing purely on following instructions to create a predefined model, this book-and-brick set was designed to encourage creative, free-form building by providing a selection of elements alongside a narrative-driven guide. The publication fits into the broader Ninjago cultural phenomenon, which has remained one of the LEGO Group’s most successful original intellectual properties since its launch in 2011.
The volume was curated to provide inspiration through themed build ideas, featuring photography that emphasizes the versatility of the included bricks. Designed by a team of builders and editors specializing in LEGO lore, the book aimed to bridge the gap between structured sets and imaginative play. It was generally well-received by parents and educators as a constructive entry point into the Ninjago universe, praised for shifting the focus from consumption to active participation in design.
