Where it came from
LEGO Space: Building the Future, authored by Peter Reid and Tim Goddard, emerged from the vibrant adult fan of LEGO (AFOL) community that grew around the classic LEGO Space themes of the late 1970s and 1980s. Published by No Starch Press in 2014, the book was conceived as a tribute to the aesthetics of early space exploration sets, blending historical context with high-quality photography and instructional builds that capture the minimalist, optimistic tone of the original 'Classic Space' era.
The book is centered around the work of Peter Reid, whose iconic 'Exo-Suit' design—famously featured in a standalone LEGO Ideas set—serves as the anchor for the book's narrative. Reid and Goddard sought to create a cohesive universe through their builds, prioritizing sleek, geometric forms and the iconic blue, gray, and yellow color palette that defined the original LEGO Space sets. The work was warmly received by the collector community for its ability to bridge the gap between nostalgic play and sophisticated model design, serving as both a design retrospective and a technical manual for enthusiasts.
