Where it came from
Released in 2009 to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars partnership, this promotional T-shirt was produced to commemorate a decade of collaboration between the LEGO Group and Lucasfilm. The partnership, which began in 1999 with the release of the first wave of sets tied to The Phantom Menace, marked LEGO's first foray into licensed intellectual property, a move that fundamentally transformed the company's business model and global market presence.
The design of the shirt features a graphic centered on the iconic Star Wars logo integrated with classic LEGO imagery, reflecting the minimalist aesthetic prevalent in early 2000s promotional apparel. It was distributed primarily through LEGO Brand Retail stores and select fan conventions to reward long-term collectors. While it was not intended as a mass-market retail product, it is regarded by enthusiasts as a significant artifact of the brand's pivot toward licensed themes, marking the point where the collaboration matured from a temporary experiment into a cornerstone of the LEGO portfolio.
