Where it came from
The LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Magnet Set, designated M229-1, was released in the mid-2000s as part of a series of promotional and retail magnet sets that featured iconic minifigures permanently affixed to magnetic backings. These sets were designed to serve as functional desk or refrigerator accessories, catering to fans who sought to display their favorite characters in a more utilitarian capacity beyond the traditional play-based building sets.
The minifigure design follows the aesthetic established by the LEGO Star Wars theme during its early-to-mid era, characterized by detailed torso printing and the classic helmet mold associated with Darth Vader. While these magnets were often received as a convenient way to collect specific high-demand characters without purchasing larger playsets, they became notable among collectors for the permanent glue used to bond the figures to the magnetic base, a feature that distinguishes them from standard loose minifigures.
