Where it came from
Released in 2015 by DK Publishing, Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy was created to showcase the artistry of Vesa Lehtimäki, a Finnish photographer and designer widely recognized in the fan community for his evocative, atmospheric toy photography. The book serves as a curated retrospective of his work, which often features LEGO Star Wars figures placed in meticulously crafted dioramas that utilize practical effects like baking soda to simulate snow and flour to mimic dust, breathing life into the plastic subjects.
The publication arrived during a period of peak interest in adult-oriented LEGO collectibles and high-end photography books. Critics and fans received the book as a unique departure from standard set-focused literature, praising its ability to elevate commercial toys into the realm of fine art. Lehtimäki's vision was to bridge the gap between childhood play and cinematic storytelling, and his work in this collection is widely credited with helping to professionalize the hobby of toy photography within the broader Star Wars fandom.
