Where it came from
LEGO Stunt Rally, released in 2000, was a unique attempt by the LEGO Group to bridge the gap between physical construction sets and digital gaming experiences. As part of a broader multimedia initiative that included a companion PC video game, the set was designed to allow players to construct modular track layouts that mirrored the high-speed, off-road racing aesthetic of the digital software. The design utilized a specialized track system featuring flexible, colorful segments that departed from the traditional studded baseplates, reflecting a period when the company was experimenting with more kinetic, action-oriented play themes.
The 5724 Stunt Rally set, often referred to as the Competition Track, served as the centerpiece for this theme. It was developed during a transition era for the company, where they sought to compete more directly with slot car and remote-control racing toys. While the theme was generally well-received by younger demographics for its innovative track-building possibilities, it remained a short-lived experimental line, eventually being phased out as the company moved toward more standardized modular racing concepts in subsequent years.
