Where it came from
The LEGO Letters Small set, numbered 1018-1, was released in 1984 as part of the LEGO Educational line. Designed primarily for school settings and childcare environments, the set was created to provide a tactile, modular tool for teaching literacy, allowing children to physically construct letters using standard LEGO bricks rather than relying solely on traditional writing implements.
The design of the set focuses on the fundamental geometry of the Latin alphabet, utilizing a limited color palette and basic brick shapes to maintain simplicity. Because it was intended as a functional classroom resource, the set was distributed primarily through educational supply channels rather than the retail toy market, making it a distinct and historically significant example of LEGO's early efforts to integrate play-based learning into formal curriculum.
