Where it came from
The LEGO 846-1 Lighting Set was released in 1977 as part of the specialized LEGO Electric product line. Designed to integrate with standard system bricks, this set was an early attempt by the company to introduce functional, low-voltage illumination into larger builds. It provided a glimpse into the company’s efforts to expand the creative potential of their sets by incorporating genuine electronic components, moving beyond static play to include light-up features in an era before battery-powered brick innovations became standard.
The set featured a transformer, cables, and bulb holders meant to be wired through a baseplate or wall structure. It reflects the industrial design aesthetic of the late seventies, prioritizing functionality over the sleek, modular battery systems seen in later decades. While it was well-regarded by hobbyists interested in architectural modeling, its reliance on a wired transformer meant that it was ultimately a niche product for stationary display rather than mobile, play-based construction.
