Where it came from
The LEGO Lucky Cat, released as set 40436-1 in 2020, was designed as a stylized, brick-built interpretation of the traditional Japanese maneki-neko figurine. Created during a period when the LEGO Group was expanding its focus on display-oriented models and cultural motifs, the set was intended to serve as a desktop ornament or a small gift. It features the cat's signature raised paw, which is mechanically articulated to mimic the beckoning gesture associated with bringing good fortune.
The model utilizes a clean, minimal aesthetic that reflects the charm of the original clay or ceramic figures while adapting them to the geometric constraints of the LEGO system. Upon its release, it was well-received by the adult collector community as a clever, accessible piece of decor. Its design successfully balances the iconic silhouette of the Lucky Cat with the tactile nature of interlocking bricks, making it a distinct departure from the brand's more complex vehicle or building sets.
