Where it came from
The LEGO City Main Square set, released in 2020 as part of the broader City theme, was designed to provide a comprehensive centerpiece for the modern LEGO town layout. Developed during a period when the City theme was shifting toward more modular and interactive play experiences, the set includes a variety of specialized elements such as a tram, a concert stage, and a functional crane, reflecting the vibrant, multi-functional nature of contemporary urban planning.
The design team focused on density and variety to appeal to both younger builders and adult fans looking to populate their dioramas. By incorporating specific structures like a city hall, a diner, and a park area, the set serves as an architectural anchor for the City line. It received positive attention for its inclusion of a diverse range of minifigures and its attempt to integrate multiple distinct aspects of urban infrastructure into a single, cohesive building experience.
