Where it came from
The Mako Submarine set, released in 2023, was designed as part of the LEGO Avatar theme to coincide with the cinematic release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The set captures the sleek, industrial aesthetic of the RDA (Resources Development Administration) vehicles from the film, emphasizing functional, combat-oriented design over the organic shapes associated with the Na'vi. It was developed to offer builders an immersive play experience featuring articulated fins, an opening cockpit, and a dual-cockpit design.
The model was designed to mirror the underwater tactical capabilities of the cinematic counterpart, focusing on mechanical complexity and marine-inspired functionality. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the franchise and collectors alike, noted particularly for its accurate representation of the film's vehicle proportions and the inclusion of detailed character minifigures. It serves as a representative example of how LEGO translates complex, large-scale film craft into accessible, displayable building sets.
