Where it came from
Released in 2003 under the LEGO Discovery theme, this set was designed to commemorate the real-world Mars Exploration Rover mission, which sent the Spirit and Opportunity rovers to the Martian surface. The set was created to capitalize on the public excitement surrounding the landing, offering a detailed, large-scale technical representation that aligned with NASA's exploration efforts during that period.
The model was designed to reflect the functional aesthetic of space-faring machinery, utilizing a mix of Technic and System elements to replicate the rover's complex suspension and solar array configuration. It was received by the community as a significant entry in the company's space-themed offerings, praised for its accurate depiction of the rover's distinctive six-wheeled rocker-bogie suspension system.
