Where it came from
The LEGO System of Play, which introduced the iconic plastic brick, began its evolution in the late 1950s. The 2-11 Medium Basic Set, released in 1961, emerged during a foundational period when the company was transitioning from wooden toys to the interlocking plastic brick system that defined the modern brand. This set was designed to provide builders with a versatile foundation, focusing on the core utility of the bricks rather than a specific thematic build.
The design of the 2-11 set reflected a minimalist aesthetic intended to spark imaginative play. It was part of an early product line that emphasized creative freedom, offering a balanced assortment of standard bricks in primary colors. This approach was highly successful, helping to solidify the modular design philosophy that allowed these pieces to remain compatible with every subsequent generation of the product, ensuring the set's longevity as a functional building block.
