Where it came from
The Mini Steamboat Willie set, released in 2023, was created by the LEGO Group as a tribute to the 1928 short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world. Designed as part of the Disney 100th anniversary celebrations, this smaller-scale model serves as a spiritual successor to the larger 2019 Ideas set, focusing on accessibility and displayability for fans of classic animation history.
The model features a stylized, monochrome aesthetic intended to evoke the feel of early black-and-white cinema. It captures the iconic smokestacks and paddle wheel movement of the original riverboat, reflecting the historical shift toward the synchronized sound that defined Steamboat Willie's breakthrough success. Critics and collectors praised the set for its efficient use of parts to achieve a recognizable silhouette, noting that it successfully balances play features with a sophisticated, nostalgic design.
