Where it came from
Released in 2016 as part of the LEGO Nexo Knights theme, Moltor's Lava Smasher was designed to anchor the initial wave of the series. The theme was conceived as a high-concept fusion of medieval fantasy and futuristic technology, aiming to bridge the gap between classic castle-building play and the digital connectivity of the Nexo Knights mobile app. The set features the antagonist Moltor, a lava monster designed with a rugged, destructive aesthetic meant to contrast with the sleek, high-tech appearance of the heroic knights.
The design of the Lava Smasher focuses on play functionality, incorporating gear-driven punching arms that reflect the character's aggressive, volcanic nature. When it launched, the set received attention for its creative use of parts to convey elemental themes of heat and rock. It serves as a representative example of LEGO's mid-2010s push toward narrative-heavy themes that utilized integrated AR elements to enhance the physical building experience.
