Where it came from
The LEGO Motor Add-On for Simple Mechanisms, designated 9615-1, was introduced as an educational expansion pack designed to integrate with the LEGO Education 'Simple Machines' line. Released during the era when the company began shifting its focus toward pedagogical STEM tools, this set provided students with the components necessary to transition from static models to automated, motorized builds. It was created to bridge the gap between basic mechanical principles and elementary robotics, allowing for hands-on experimentation with kinetic energy and torque.
The design of the 9615-1 set reflects the functional, utilitarian aesthetic characteristic of early 2000s LEGO Education products. It centered on a standard 9-volt gear motor and a small battery box, prioritizing durability and ease of assembly for a classroom environment. By allowing users to animate their structural creations, the set served as a versatile tool for teaching mechanical advantage, and it was widely utilized by educators to demonstrate how simple gears and pulleys could be powered through a consistent power source.
