Where it came from
Released in 2018 as part of the LEGO City Mountain Police subtheme, Mountain Fugitives (60171-1) was designed to expand the play potential of the broader police-themed sets. The set represents a high-speed chase scenario, a staple of the City line intended to foster imaginative roleplay regarding law enforcement and suburban adventure. It features a small police ATV, a crook's hideout, and two minifigures, reflecting the design philosophy of accessible, action-oriented builds that characterized the era.
The set was developed by the LEGO Group's design team to fit within the aesthetic consistency of the 2018 Mountain Police wave, which moved the classic police pursuit narrative into rugged, forested terrain. It was generally received as a functional, entry-level set that provided key characters and accessories, such as a gold bar and a backpack, to support the narrative of a criminal escape. Like many sets in the City line, its design focused on playability and quick assembly for a younger demographic.
