Where it came from
The MT-51 Claw-Tank Ambush was released in 2005 as part of the LEGO Exo-Force theme. This series represented a departure for the company, blending traditional brick construction with a distinct aesthetic inspired by Japanese anime and mecha culture. The set was designed to introduce the theme's core conflict between human resistance fighters and a rogue AI faction, featuring a pilot minifigure and a buildable walker vehicle with claw-like appendages.
The design focused on dynamic play features, such as moving limbs and hidden missile launchers, which were hallmarks of the Exo-Force line. Upon release, the set was received as an accessible entry point into the theme, praised for its unique mechanical silhouette and the inclusion of light-up brick elements. It remains a notable example of LEGO's efforts in the mid-2000s to experiment with narrative-driven original themes that incorporated cross-cultural visual influences.
