Where it came from
Released by the LEGO Group in 2018 as part of the Duplo preschool line, the My First Emotions set (10861-1) was designed to assist toddlers in identifying and expressing feelings. The set features double-sided illustrated bricks that display different facial expressions, allowing young children to engage with concepts of happiness, sadness, anger, and sleepiness through tactile play. This thematic focus aligns with the educational goals often prioritized in the Duplo series, emphasizing cognitive development and social-emotional learning for children aged 18 months to 3 years.
The design of the set focuses on primary colors and chunky, rounded plastic elements that are safe and easy for small hands to manipulate. By including bricks with varied expressions, the designers intended to encourage conversation between caregivers and children regarding emotional states. Upon its release, the set was well-received by parents and educators as an accessible, durable tool for early childhood emotional literacy, fitting into the broader educational philosophy that frames play as a critical component of formative learning.
