Where it came from
The LEGO Narwhal, set 40239, was released in 2017 as part of a seasonal promotional line. Designed to capture the whimsical charm of Arctic wildlife, the set uses a limited palette of grey and blue elements to construct a stylized version of the marine mammal, complete with its characteristic long, spiraling tusk. It was primarily distributed as an impulse-buy set, intended to offer a quick, accessible build that showcased the versatility of basic system bricks in organic, creature-focused modeling.
The design process for this set focused on maximizing character within a very restricted piece count, utilizing curved slopes and simple joints to imply movement. As a standalone seasonal item, it was well-received by fans of the brand for its clever use of parts and its status as a unique entry in the LEGO menagerie. It reflects a period in the company's history where they frequently explored niche animal subjects in small-format sets, providing collectors with affordable, distinct display pieces that complemented larger thematic builds.
