Where it came from
Released in 2013 as part of the LEGO Hero Factory line, the NEX set 6221-1 represented a mid-series refresh of the theme's core characters. The set was designed to be a smaller, agile reconnaissance unit, reflecting the modular construction system that defined the Hero Factory era, which prioritized ball-and-socket joints to allow for high degrees of articulation and custom cross-compatibility between sets.
The visual design for this iteration of NEX leaned into a sleek, tactical aesthetic, utilizing a distinct color palette of lime green and silver to differentiate it from the heavier, armored variants of the series. While the set received modest attention from fans of the buildable figure genre, it functioned primarily as a accessible entry point for younger builders, successfully capturing the aggressive, futuristic design language of the Hero Factory aesthetic.
