Where it came from
Released in 1998, the LEGO Ninja Sword (part of set 851335-1) was part of a small accessories pack within the early Ninja theme. This theme was a significant departure for the company at the time, as it moved away from the traditional Space, Castle, and Pirates motifs to explore feudal Japanese aesthetics, reflecting a growing global interest in martial arts and Eastern-inspired narratives during the late nineties.
The design of the sword piece itself reflects the minimalist approach of the era, utilizing a simple, sleek plastic mold that captured the essence of a katana while maintaining the classic LEGO compatibility. It was illustrated and conceived by the design team to be compatible with the specialized Ninjago-predecessor minifigures, emphasizing agility and combat, and was generally well-received by fans for adding a new layer of character customization to their existing brick collections.
