Where it came from
The Ninjago Playmat, released under the identification 851345-1, was introduced by the LEGO Group as an accessory for their long-running Ninjago theme. It was designed to provide a dedicated, immersive surface for children to display their sets and engage in roleplay, featuring stylized graphics that evoke the landscapes of Ninjago City and its surrounding mystical environments. This playmat reflects LEGO's strategy during the mid-2010s of expanding the play experience beyond individual building sets to encompass broader storytelling environments.
The design of the mat leans into the bold, vibrant aesthetic established by the Ninjago animated series, utilizing a color palette and character motifs that align with the elemental ninja aesthetic. It was received primarily as a functional utility item for younger builders, designed to protect surfaces while serving as a backdrop for the theme's prolific lineup of dragons, vehicles, and minifigures. As an accessory rather than a core building set, it remains a nostalgic piece of ephemera for enthusiasts of the Ninjago universe.
